Sunita’s Story — Participating to Change the Story of Cancer ❤️🩹🏃♀️
In March 2024, my life changed in an instant. I developed acute liver failure, which quickly led to coma and multi-organ failure. I had no idea that in just a few weeks I would go from being active to fighting for every breath. The reason was later found to be two overlapping autoimmune conditions.
I was incredibly fortunate to receive an urgent lifesaving liver transplant at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, thanks to a generous donor family and a world-class transplant team. After the transplant, followed by a tracheostomy ( which took my voice completely for months ), and a total of 2½ months in hospital, I had to relearn how to walk, talk, eat, and drink.
Just as I was rebuilding my life, I faced a further challenge — undergoing cancer treatment under the Haematology team at Addenbrookes last year.
The last two years have been physically and emotionally demanding , but with the support of friends, family, and the incredible medical teams, we’ve kept going. I feel profoundly grateful for the expertise, compassion, and humanity of the teams at Addenbrookes who continue to guide me.
, which will transform cancer care by bringing together world-class research and specialist treatment to patients across the east of England and beyond.
